What would you pay for a backpack that makes your gear feel lighter, the load more comfortable? A pack that combats fatigue - allowing you to save your energy for creativity.
Imagine being free to lose yourself in the creative process knowing your gear is protected even with an open pack. Lenses and cameras won't go flying out if you forget to zip the backpack! Your backpack becomes a custom tool - protecting your gear AND your energy.
The Renaissance Photo Tech (RPT) LightGear system is all that and more. In addition to an outstanding camera backpack, you get:
- Space for all the photo gear you'll need and more. How much Gear? Click here to see for yourself!
- Flexibility to move your kit from one pack or case to another.
- Optional "break-out kit" when packing light.
- Protection for lenses you choose to leave behind, each in its own case.
- Economy - buy only the protection you need now - add more later.
- Stealth factor - disguise the fact that you are carrying camera gear.
With LightGear you get it all. It cost $50,000 to develop – to achieve the quality, look, feel and adaptability - and, it can be offered to you for less than you'll pay for the largest selling camera backpacks.
The Camera Backpack Jungle
Bruce Laughton
President of RPT
With 220 camera backpacks to choose from, why are people still searching? Maybe because those packs are all variations of the same theme – the most expensive ones having more bells, whistles and – weight.
At a recent tradeshow, a customer said; “My camera backpack’s comfortable.” I smiled and asked; “Compared to what?” He paused, gave me several rapid eye blinks and then admitted he'd never tried a technical backpack. I assured him he wasn’t alone. I invited him to get his gear, load it into one of my LightGear systems and wander the show for awhile. He did. Thirty-minutes later he returned and smiled as he shook his head – “I thought it was comfortable.” He bought the full LightGear system on the spot.
RPT was founded to produce a truly different camera backpack - a custom solution at a mass-produced price. One that gives you control over the layout – with unlimited flexibility. It took 18 months to meet this goal. The system is all I hoped it would be and is unique - earning a U.S. patent (patent pending.)
Why Should You Care About Backpacks?
For most of us, time in the field is a scarce resource. Quality time in field - even rarer. Quality time is when you are rested with a full reserve of energy to pour into creativity. Unfortunately, many photographers are spending their energy CARRYING rather than CREATING! A quick demonstration may help make my point:
Pressure on the Upper Trapezius
Place 2 or 3 fingers on the upper trapezius muscle where a backpack’s shoulder straps rest. Press down and hold pressure. Notice how discomfort grows and lingers even after the pressure is off. While padding delays discomfort, the load on the upper trapezius is an energy sink – causing discomfort and hastening fatigue.
Whether you carry your gear for short jaunts or long hikes, it must be comfortable. If you are suffering after just a few dozen yards, motivation to go the "extra mile" is lost. Fatigue leads to dumb mistakes, half-hearted execution and missed opportunities.
Considering all the time, expense, and effort preceding that shutter-drop moment - why use anything but the very best fatigue-reducing backpack system!!
The Quantum-Leap Alternative!
1. Technical backpacks make the load feel lighter!
Technical backpacks transfer the load to the skeletal frame at the hips and lumbar curve. This allows the weight to be carried by the quadriceps – the strongest weight-bearing muscles in the human body. Your kit feels lighter and more comfortable and that conserves energy AND CREATIVITY.
2. Technical backpacks are lightweight.
Do you know what the leading camera backpack weighs? 11.5 pounds (5.2 kg)... EMPTY!!
The average LightGear system weighs 4.8 pounds - a 6.7 pound drop in DEAD weight! How is this possible?
Only 2.8 Ounces!
- By molding a fabric and foam laminate on a 60-ton press to create a soft but semi-rigid shape. This gives you the ‘dynamic duo’ in equipment protection – rigidity and foam cushioning - hitting the sweet spot for protection and lightness!
- By using individual cases so you can protect each component and eliminate unneeded padding and dead weight.
- By using off-the-shelf technical packs designed for backpacking, where good suspension and lightness are demanded.
3. Technical backpacks come in different sizes for different folks.
I don’t know anyone who would pay top dollar for one-size-fits-all walking shoes or boots. Yet, folks willingly pay premium prices for one-size-fits-all camera backpacks. While it is possible to create a backpack for a wide range of torso lengths, it is expensive to make that suspension so it doesn't sag. Existing camera backpacks fail to do this.
Inexpensive one-size-fits-all suspensions.....don’t. And if it does fit, the adjustability sacrifices rigidity – they sag. When a pack doesn’t fit or when the suspension sags, the load settles onto the trapeziums.
At Photobackpacker, we sell 2 different RPT/Kelty Redwings: one for average torso lengths and the other for short to average. We also offer 3 of the Granite Gear packs a premium line of backpacks.
For short treks with your gear, the Kelty P1 is a great choice. If you are carrying extremely heavy loads, covering longer distances - the P2 is a logical step up. If you are covering great distances or simply need all the help you can get and are willing to accept reduced accessibility to gain a world-class suspension - Granite Gear packs are the clear choice. Lastly, if you already have a well-fitting technical pack, great! We will help you convert it into the best photo backpack you will ever love!
4. Now – Add LightGear
Now take that well-fitting pack and add LightGear. With 17 different cases to choose from you can achieve a custom fit for you gear. 4x5, 5x7, compact 8x10 and soon, medium format systems – you will find your solutions here.
